Our work

We’re proud of our portfolio. Take a look at some of the case studies below to find out how we could help you turn your ideas into your lived reality.

Ecclesiastical buildings are amongst the finest architecture to be found in the Calder Valley. The Methodist Chapel, Old Town sits at the head of Nutclough, above Hebden Bridge, like a monument to the history and architectural heritage of the upper valley.

Not all of Calderdale’s rich architectural heritage is held in grand, old stone buildings. The Long Barn is a conversion of an agricultural building, re-imagined, redesigned and rebuilt as a modern family home, perfectly in-tune with its surroundings and the history of its location.

St Paul’s is Grade II Listed and had fallen into disrepair when our clients bought it at auction. It is a credit to them that they committed themselves so resolutely to the challenge of rescuing the building and after nearly 4 years of incredible effort now occupy a breath-taking and unique house.

Hawdon Russell Architects had already undertaken several projects at Warley Road School when we were approached to design a new school dining hall. The school is in a deprived area of Halifax and it was important that the building was inspiring and uplifting. It is designed in order that the schoolchildren would be able to […]

Even though we have been back living in our house for the last 8 months, we are still getting great pleasure in rediscovering it. When we first met with Hawdon Russell we gave them a rather disparate list of needs and mild building based grumbles. Despite us having a fairly fixed view on what we needed, Hawdon Russell came back with a much more exciting vision and solutions to everything we had identified. The way we live in our house is now quite different from before; probably a good thing because living on a single sofa, eating our tea off our laps while watching telly wasn't the best look. We have expanded outwards to use more of the space, more of the time. Obviously the "box" is a particular highlight, but we also love the big space downstairs (with a special mention for the skylight) and the porch, which is very functional. We never knew we needed two bathrooms before, but clearly we did ... Feedback has been consistently positive, especially of the outside

Thank you to Hawdon Russell for their calm reassurance and high standards - we would have panicked and/or let things go. We've already forgotten most of the saga of the metal works and now look back on the whole process as a really positive experience. Thinking about the logistics is probably the main thing that put us off doing the work for many years - in the end, for us at least, they didn't seem that difficult after all.

We asked Hawdon Russell for a bungalow that would be both unique and practical, we had a tight budget and a small plot of land and it seemed everything we wanted would be beyond our reach - we were surprised.

The building way surpassed our expectations and everyone who sees the house loves the design, even neighbours passing by watching it being built said they would love to live in a house like this.

We needed outside space to relax when the weather was good but a conservatory was out of the picture, Hawdon Russell came up with an even better idea. We now have a lovely glass roofed terrace which we access directly from the lounge, if we open the large tri-fold doors the terrace actually becomes part of the lounge.

Care was taken when planning the build to ensure we got the best of the weather and amazing views as windows were placed to make the most of our rural setting, therefore creating a picture that changes with the seasons when we look outside.

Well done and a big thank you to Hawdon Russell Architects.
